ABSTRACT

The emergence of Homo sapiens shows a fivefold structure of consciousness: animal inheritance, a complex emotional structure, an ego consciousness, an unconscious, and a higher self. The response of the psyche to the death awareness is, first, the emergence of love, and, second, the higher self. Higher self has many attributes, including a capacity for transcendental love, higher intuition, illumination, revelation, music, art, poetry, and advanced forms of symbolic thought that appear revolutionary in evolution. The existence of the higher self in humans is a result of the inherent spirit in the cosmos, the anima mundi, an intelligence in nature and evolution. The higher self gives rise to the existence of principles above narrow self-interest and selfish calculation. It is the evolved master of consciousness, its highest expression. It is the inherent creativity of the human species, its capacity for love, wisdom, and the transcendent.
