ABSTRACT

The anatomical proximity of the several apertures also contributes to the possibility of contamination and confusion. This was the reason why SigmundFreud, in 1908, proposed the cloaca theory, according to which, as in many inferior organisms, the anus and the vagina appear to be merged in the depths of the feminine unconscious, as though they were anatomically the same organ. At the onset of puberty, the excretory function of the vagina is confirmed as it becomes the outlet for menstrual blood, in itself considered something shameful and dirty. Thus the vagina represents for the pubescent girl the organ through which undesirable secretions emerge: urine and menstrual blood, which flows like a silent cry from the uterus preparing itself for conception, which appears to bleed in protest at the absence of fertilisation. Menstrual cycles originates, in part, from confusion between the vaginaland anal activities.
