ABSTRACT

The greatest surprise, however, occurs when the child, deciding to give in to the parents continuous demands, chooses to offer a gift encouraged by the many cheers, the applause and the pampering, at last deposits the faeces in the right place: the toilet. No child is capable of understanding the logic behind toilet training because, just like animals or primitive men, children do not harbour any disposition of disgust or shame towards their own excretory functions. In far way, anality, as well as the feeling of shame and disgust that goes with it, contributed without question to the development in men of the very high and abstract sentiment of intimacy. The hypothesis differs from the classical psychoanalytical supposition which establishes that the main narcissistic injury stems from the discovery by boys that girls have no penis, and that they could lose their if their behaviour does not conform to their parents demands.
