ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author presents a case history of child Jason of 8 years 9 months old. This case started with a letter from the boy's father. He said that his son had shown signs of emotional stress for some years, currently manifesting itself in a difficulty with arithmetic and in school work generally. The father claimed to be imperfect as a father because of personal difficulties for which he was having treatment by psycho-analysis. Both the father's illness and his treatment put a severe strain on the boy's mother who was also having psychotherapy. This complex case could be summed up in terms of the boy's relative deprivation in a certain area which could be described as the normal healthy homosexuality of the father-son relationship. This was planted on top of a relative deprivation in infant–mother terms starting from early infancy and including traumatic separations.
