ABSTRACT

rior to 1998 we had no known practice for psychoanalysis and/or therapy with infants at the Skodsborg Treatment Centre for Infants (Skodsborg). We did speak with the infants. We told them things, we listened to them and we engaged the children in dialogue. We also saw the impact of the dialogue on the child and found that “speaking with” an infant is essential and necessary. Previously, at Skodsborg we mainly used words as an educational tool. We did not refer to our work with children under the age of two and a half years as “therapy” or “psychoanalysis”. With children of this age and older, we speak of play therapy, which is provided by the psychologist. However, based on our cumulative theoretical and practical experiences we have been using the term “infant therapy” for years.
