ABSTRACT

The particular study showed that more than 84% of counsellors in training withheld information from their supervisors because they were fearful of disclosing aspects of their personal life which they feared would elicit criticism. After gaining general counselling certificate counsellors will need to invest in two or more years of hard work and thousands of pounds to obtain a diploma in a specific approach. Take their counselling seriously, because they are seeking to help people who may be in a vulnerable state of mind, but do not take too seriously. It is right to want to be an effective therapist, but demanding that one be a miracle worker, and that all one’s clients should be “cured”, can create enormous pressure on the counsellor–client relationship, the more so because such a demand is not realistic. If prejudices are not recognized and confronted they will intrude into work and exert a negative influence on the relationship between client and counsellor.
