ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the transformation process and the magical moments that generate transformation. It discusses the need for the therapist to engage in risk-taking in this process. When a therapist enters the child’s life as the magical stranger, the child, as Jukka Makela described at the conference, will experience a quick sequence of novel and unusual situations that activate the child’s attachment system. In relation to this concept of the magical stranger, Jukka Makela reflected on Eia Asen’s therapy and his way of using a multifamily context as a variant of the "magical stranger" by identifying con centric circles of people who somehow feel a sense of responsibility for the child. Jukka Makela commented that what was demonstrated at the conference was that there is a magic that begins to unfold when someone is ready to take the risk of using whatever is present in the child, in the parent, and in the relationship and begins to work with it.
