ABSTRACT

The term character structure denotes three different facets: a developmental stage, a character rigidity, and character style. The first aspect of character structure relates to natural and organic developmental processes taking place during the first six years of our lives. The second aspect of the bodymind character structure relates to disruptions in healthy development. Each developmental angle brings with it new bodily, psychological, and relational challenges. A third aspect of character structure concerns lifespan developmental processes. The themes and issues every developmental angle emphasises are relevant to each of us throughout our lives. The chapter examines the concept of character structure and character armour, and explores the main developmental angles and their respective developmental rigidities. It also explores the normative and adaptive developmental structures, their bodily organisations, and the consequences of developmental rigidities. The chapter reviews the three faces of character structure in light of several developmental angles.
