ABSTRACT

Sometimes women with repeated miscarriages seek psychotherapy for help in bringing a pregnancy to term. Nearly 30 years of work have convinced the author that psychotherapy can help many women have successful pregnancies. No claim is being made that miscarriages, in general, have a psychological basis, although, certainly, nearly all have psychological consequences. This chapter provides an example about a girl named as Lucia. Lucia was an engaging woman in her mid-30s who, following her marriage, had two miscarriages in as many years. Jan had previously had a lot of therapy, much more than Lucia, but he quit after he met Lucia and his life stabilized. Psychoanalytic faith and work provided a clearing that enabled Lucia to respond to life rather than merely react. One wonders whether the baby growing within her could sense the difference.
