ABSTRACT

The quality of an adulfs life can be defined by the childhood experience of being sent away. The practice of sending children away is very old and very damaging. It is done in many parts of the world, supposedly for the child's benefit. Separating children from their parents was done regularly at the very beginning of the modern Caribbean, centuries ago. At a fundamental level, she felt unacknowledged for who she was: her parents' daughter, and a child who had lost her parents and siblings. She failed to recognize that she had been a child of six and the responsibility placed on her had been unreasonable. Mr Douglas, another sent-away child had fared a little better. He was sent away at a younger age than Ms Carter and did return home to his parents, but he suffered from feeling isolated throughout his adult life.
