Implicit in the name as that which signifies constant conjunction, and inseparable from this significance, is the quality of negation. A constant conjunction, thus bound by a name, is not whatever the personality has observed as existing previously, but may be similar to it. This has been a cause of difficulty as far back as Aristotle. In practice it presents difficulty to the patient who cannot tolerate frustration, and in whom envy, greed and cruelty are dominant. The “thoughts” can be combined with other “thoughts” in accordance with rules of syntax if they are verbally stated, rules of mathematical manipulation, if they are mathematically stated, or rules of musical composition if musically stated. The logical formulation of the problem points to a conflict between omniscience on the one hand and inquiry on the other. Analysts are so accustomed to the fact that the link between analyst and patient is verbal that certain implications of this may escape scrutiny.
