ABSTRACT

Judith was a tall, thin, blonde woman in her early twenties when the therapist first met her, while therapist was working in a psychiatric emergency room. Judith was the eldest child of a prosperous businessman from another city. The father was stern and preoccupied with business, yet caring. The mother was supportive and overly indulgent. She had a “Good Angel” who lived just over her right shoulder. This “Good Angel” was a woman, dressed in white flowing robes as any good angel should be. The “Good Angel” told her to do things that were, to her mind, “good” for her, such as cutting her wrists. The “Good Angel” had persisted since early adolescence, when she had told Judith to cut herself, and she had carved “HURT” on her abdomen. Therapists talked about whom the “Bad Devil” might represent. Slowly she was able to understand that it represented me, or a more positive internal aspect of herself.
