ABSTRACT

This chapter covers the stage of life associated with the final years of full-time education and beyond, into employment or similar activity. For most young adults, it is a time of choice. By the end of adolescence, most young adults will have developed a clear understanding of their own identity. However, much of young adults' views of themselves will be determined in relation to others. This is the result of the particular social and cultural world in which they are growing up. Young adults of whatever ability want to feel more independent in the way they live their lives, whether this is in education, employment, or another activity. A further education college may offer a wider range of courses than does a school, and enrolment can offer the young person with a learning disability the motivation of doing something he has a particular interest in.
