ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses how taking a look at personal memes, or the rules that people live by, can give them valuable insight into their unconscious belief systems, motivations, and behavioral patterns. Memes were intended to be the cultural analogy to genes, which are the biological units of inheritance. The memes "Hard work is an absolute goodness," "Seeing perfection," and "Attention to details" are all related to the achievement domain of functioning and can be applied to academics or work. The other memes, "Clean and mended" and "Sit like a lady," promote hygiene and a neat appearance. The slips of the tongue, or "Freudian slips," are familiar to most of the people and are the most commonly known form of parapraxes, or unintentional errors. Parapraxes are not limited to verbal speech; unintentional errors in memory or physical action also fall under this category. They include mishearing, misreading, mislaying and losing objects, and inadvertent physical gestures, among others.
