ABSTRACT

Millions of people access social media sites to keep in touch with their friends and exchange information. Many use social media, such as Twitter, Facebook and Snapchat, to share ideas and engage in conversations. These sites offer a range of learning opportunities to access expert advice, encounter challenges, defend opinions and amend ideas in the face of criticism. In Asia, over a billion people use the WeChat mobile application to send text messages, share photos, hold videoconferences, read news, write blogs, make friends, order taxis, transfer money and buy goods. Social media make it possible to involve and draw on the experience of people around the world. The projects described have all developed over time. Each one helps people to learn by creating a social network around events that are remote in time or space. Some organizations have set up social media specifically to offer learning opportunities.
