ABSTRACT
A story provides a narrative structure that helps in remembering and recalling events. The narrator of a story, the storyteller, creates a series of events from a specific point of view to create a meaningful whole. Storytelling is fundamental to human learning. Stories provide narratives that help to make sense of the past by showing how events are connected over time. Sagas, parables and fables are all ways of making important events memorable by weaving them into a coherent story. Narrative pedagogy was developed for nursing education, though it could be adopted in other professions, such as social work or business. The approach involves students and teachers working together to discuss and interpret their experiences. Narrative pedagogy for nurses takes place in the real world. A narrative-centred learning environment, by contrast, provides a fictional ‘story world’ in which guided exploratory learning can take place.
