ABSTRACT

Students who engage with authentic scientific tools are learning how to act like scientists. Remote laboratory experiments and telescopes were first provided for experienced scientists and university students. Remote lab systems can provide user-friendly web interfaces, curriculum materials and professional development for teachers. In a remote laboratory, students control real scientific equipment and collect real data over the internet. Remote labs are available for many topics including astronomy, biology, chemistry, computer networking, earth science, engineering, hydraulics, microelectronics, physics and robotics. The Faulkes Telescope Project is a network of telescopes around the world that can be controlled remotely from a classroom or home. Go-Lab is a portal to remote and virtual labs for use by schools. Doing practical experiments with real scientific equipment is no longer restricted to science labs in schools or universities during normal working hours.
