ABSTRACT

The analysis of economic resources available to master farmers and other peasant cultivators shows that master farmers possess certain advantages over other peasants. So far it has shown that master farmers have more land than other peasant cultivators and grow a greater proportion of cash crops. They have also more implements for cultivation and this should reduce their need for more labour due to slightly larger acreages. African peasants often complain of labour shortage and state that this prevents them from cultivating their fields more intensely. A greater labour force should overcome this handicap and increase their agricultural output. Weeding is burdensome to all peasant families. Women and children are expected to do most of this work, for men shy away from it. Some men even go off to seek urban employment, and if their wives need additional help, they are encouraged to call in work parties.
