ABSTRACT

Work is the major factor of production in Tio society. It is interrelated with the other relevant factor in that the division of labour flows from the technical skills needed to produce certain goods or services. Yet, from another angle any use of time is also a consumption for the person participating in the activity. Together with the uses of goods, the uses of time form the whole of domestic life in the Tio village. This chapter discusses the topics: making finished goods, the domestic use of goods, and the domestic use of time, for a better understanding of domestic life. The basic needs of the Tio were dress, dwelling, and food. A decent living, a normal standard of living consisted of specified ways of dressing, living, and eating. Time is a commodity and its use is a consumption by itself. Social values determined the consumption patterns and especially favoured those which allowed status to be expressed in its various forms.
