ABSTRACT

The arrangement of “Dark Horse” is a step forward for George Harrison, and suggests a number of significant influences at work. The text of “Dark Horse” refers to the winner of a race that had initially been considered a longshot. Dark Horse was scheduled to be released by Apple Records on 9 December 1974. To coincide with that date, Harrison and Ravi Shankar had planned a tour of North America that was scheduled to begin in early November. The setlists were eclectically structured to include Eastern and Western musical elements within an ambitious show that featured rock players from the Dark Horse sessions along with virtuoso performers from Shankar’s own ensemble. The players on the original Dark Horse session of “His Name is Legs” were George on vocals, acoustic guitar, and piano, Billy Preston on electric piano, Willie Weeks on bass, and Andy Newmark on drums.
