ABSTRACT

To analyze a field as complex as the field of higher education, we need a robust theoretical framework. I leverage the strengths of the theory of institutional logics and the theory of mediatization to develop such a framework. The theory of institutional logics brings the multi-faceted nature of the field whereas the theory of mediatization allows focusing on its content and viewing it as a cultural institution. In this chapter, I introduce both the theories and their constructs, and then propose their integration to analyze the practice of teaching in the field of higher education. I also present my research questions and an overview of multi-level multi-case study research design that comprises field-archival analysis spanning the period from 1997 to 2017, six organizational case studies, and individual interviews within those organizations.
