ABSTRACT

This chapter is a review of the contribution made by Lucien Sève towards what he described as the development of a Marxist theory of the personality. The aim is to present Sève’s theoretical contribution in developing a theory of personality in as comprehensive and systematic fashion as possible, including its evolution over time, from the 1960s until the 2010s, so that the body of his work can serve as the theoretical framework for the empirical chapters that follow. This includes discussion of his work on personality, historical forms of individuality and biography, both by sympathetic critics as well as others taking aim at his alleged neglect of cultural and social factors in the determination of the course of the personality and its biography. It also includes his recent responses in correspondence.
