ABSTRACT

Remedial programmes have many features in common with the motor-visual-perceptual activities described earlier as part of readiness for reading, but, of course, the emphasis differs in remedial work. The aims of the Kephart-type motor programme in school are: To develop within each pupil a greater awareness of his own body, which may have a direct influence on his perceptual abilities and to organize internally a good sense of direction and the ability to discriminate directional movements: left/right, baekwards/forwards, etc. To achieve its aims the programme must constantly appeal to appropriate motives and natural interests, and give opportunities for success. Pupils should be encouraged to use appropriate language while carrying out the exercises. Enjoyment is essential if the pupil is to be emotionally motivated so that ultimately he sees himself as a capable, likeable human being.
