ABSTRACT

The Gosain who took to the work of bankers enjoyed great respect in Rajputana, Hyderabad and other States. They proved very useful to the rulers of these States by standing security for the tributes imposed on them by the Marathas and other conquerors. The Gosain bankers proved very helpful to the Indian princes in conducting their government, both in war and civil administration, by their loans and also by standing security for the due payment of the war indemnity imposed upon them by invaders like the Marathas. The Government of the Nizam of Hyderabad was most heavily indebted to the Gosain bankers, who were very numerous and enjoyed the highest honour in that State for their wealth and influence. The Bansa Puri Math belongs to a famous banker family of Satara, who had often helped the kings and nobles with loans and exerted influence on politics.
