ABSTRACT

In the spiritual sphere as well as political field the Dashnami monastic orders, detailed in every corner of India, placed an important role in moulding the currents and cross-currents in the channels of our country's history. Even today there exists a long chain of these monasteries which are playing their part well in the spiritual, economic and cultural life of country and each of them has its own contribution to make; amongst them Mahanirvani Akhara ranks first. The monks pertaining to this Akhara own a peculiar tradition; the nagas—weird unclothed sadhus—have become warriors of repute. A number of Mandaleshwars, who are the senior members and men of letters are appointed by the akhara to propagate Vedic religion. The managers of such akharas are known as Dangali Mathadhari. Swami Vidyanandji, another Mandaleshwar of the akhara and a man of imposing personality, a well-known preacher of Gita is leaving no stone unturned in the noble cause of the propagation of Gita philosophy.
