ABSTRACT

What do sloth and zeal mean for leaders? Sloth as a sin is sluggish laziness. We imagine leaders as energetic, hardworking, and with foresight, continuously creating more and more value. Sloth however presents a problem in society, and in the end its leaders are held responsible. We see sloth in the absence of interest that runs through self-selected monocultures, those who neglect problems and fail to pursue their duties. It is a collusion to refuse to know or to pursue the truth. Groupthink is contagious and an aspect of sloth. Sloth is about absent love, rendering a person insufficiently purposeful and weak, thrown by an invisible force between escapism and hopelessness. Zeal, the virtue that balances sloth, comes into action through work. It takes true effort and is an intrinsic element of modern leadership. Zeal is about freely following the direction pointed out by the thing that matters at the moment. The chapter explores the importance of dreams in dealing with sloth and manifesting zeal in the context of leadership.
