ABSTRACT
This chapter examines the gap between China’s assertive international behaviors and Chinese President Xi Jinping’s domestic consolidation of his individual power. This shrinking gap is creating greater distance between China and Taiwan in terms of relationality. In other words, the current lack of consensus in cross-Strait relations is not due to the absence of communication channels but due to a lack of common ground on which relational factors previously binding Taiwan and China can be extended.
