ABSTRACT

The form of assessment and record keeping always needs to be related to the purpose for which the record is being kept. Record keeping is important for all pupils but, for children with special needs, the pupil records are an essential part of the school programme for helping them. The form of record which a school selects can make it easy or difficult for the teacher who completes it. The Warnock Report had a good deal to say about the records which should be kept on a pupil with special educational needs. The Report also suggested that parents should be involved in assessment; that assessment should involve discovering how a child responds over a period and that family circumstances should be taken into account. A number of people have responsibility for an individual pupil and the records should bring their views together so that there can be a check that there is progress across the curriculum.
