ABSTRACT

Evaluation is an important part of the work of any school and involves all members of staff. Evaluation is needed not only for the work of the pupils with special needs and the teachers within the department, but for the overall work of the school in this area. All teachers observe what their pupils do and say, and question them in order to assess their progress. A skilled and experienced observer can take into account many factors which are acknowledged to be important but which may not be easy to measure. In making assessments by observation a teacher needs to check judgement occasionally against various kinds of information from tests. Tests might be regarded as a further step towards making assessment more objective. Check-lists might be regarded as a particular form of testing. They are particularly useful for assessing the specific areas in which a pupil needs to learn and provide a valuable record for the teacher and the pupil.
