ABSTRACT

Ideally a school needs teachers who not only have suitable personal qualities but are also very knowledgeable about special needs. Many special needs teachers have taught very young children in primary schools and this gives them experience of teaching some subjects from the beginning. A special needs teacher should also be well organised to deal with the wide variety of demands likely to be made. The special needs staff may also have the task of managing the work of ancillaries, each with a special role related to a particular child. The special needs teacher requires the following skills and knowledge: Ability to observe pupils, identify and analyse their needs, Skill in counselling pupils, Skill in problem-solving Knowledge and skill in classroom organisation and creating a learning environment. It also includes Knowledge of a wide range of approaches and materials for special needs work, Competence in managing resources and records Skill in dealing with parents.
