ABSTRACT

This chapter examines eternal events managed by industry professionals' publishing house, or where their author is attending and outlines author talks where industry professionals are chairing a discussion. It explores external events where industry professionals' publishing house is attending as a participant and hence potential vendor and considers internal events such as company conferences. Literary publishing is well placed to extend the opportunity to discuss a particular title, or meet its author, into a learning or entertainment experience. Publishers themselves are increasingly organising events, both for keen readers to meet their favourite authors and for would-be writers, selling them advice on the publishing industry and writing processes. Organising authors for festivals and literary events will usually be the responsibility of the in-house publicist in a large publishing company; in a smaller publisher or one that does only a small amount of this type of event, the marketing department will handle publicist work.
