ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the profession of Mohammedan scholars on education. It deals with the 'free professions'. The Bida barbers, busy and prosperous, do not practise farming in addition to their main occupation; nor do sons of barbers ever follow any other profession. The public is aware of the distinctions. It is well aware of the special field of certain foreign barber-doctors who frequently come to Bida to practise. In Bida drumming and music were never tied to the narrow scope of limited traditional occasions; nor was the development of the artistic style rigidly hemmed in ritual. The Bida practice also introduces a completely novel element into the traditional craft, namely, music and dancing executed by professional women dancers and singers. A number of performers, drummers and women singers associate with one another, and form themselves into a 'band' or 'company'.
