ABSTRACT

In this chapter, Danielle I. Szlawieniec-Haw introduces her world-first study into professional actors’ lived experiences of representing suffering, distress, and/or violence. She begins by laying out her background as an actor and an academic, including how she came to her research. Following that, Szlawieniec-Haw addresses the purpose of Fiction’s Truth. She also offers up key terminology, proposing her new term, dolesse, to capture the grouping of suffering, distress, and/or violence.
