ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the landscape around Danielle I. Szlawieniec-Haw’s groundbreaking study into professional actors’ lived experiences of representing dolesse. Szlawieniec-Haw provides a much-needed summary of the way actors have been positioned by several key acting approaches. She also explores significant differences between live and mediatized productions. From there, she looks at what representations of dolesse offer society, as well as the role of witnessing and the “witnessing professional”. To close, Szlawieniec-Haw introduces why it is vital to respect actors’ humanity, health, and wellness.
