ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the second theme emerging from Danielle I. Szlawieniec-Haw’s groundbreaking study into professional actors’ lived experiences of representing dolesse. This theme captures the intense emotions and lingering elements Szlawieniec-Haw’s participants described, including both costs and rewards. Szlawieniec-Haw focuses first on actors’ intense emotions in preparation settings, then in performance settings. She moves on to short-term and long-term lingering elements. This chapter then works in tandem with the next, which considers these intense emotions and lingerings in relation to relevant scholarship and research.
