ABSTRACT

Danielle I. Szlawieniec-Haw spends this chapter digging further into the costs and rewards of representing dolesse. To start, she looks at the overall notion that representing dolesse can tax the actors who undertake it, considering why that is the case. She then explores the stigma actors can face from themselves and others in relation to the consequences of representing dolesse. From there, Szlawieniec-Haw addresses key points of resonance between her participants’ experiences and research conducted with non-arts professionals who engage with narratives and/or images of dolesse in their work. The way the medical model has been used to frame the consequences of representing dolesse is explored—and challenged. Finally, Szlawieniec-Haw addresses personal factors, including demographics and past encounters with dolesse, discussing what role—if any—these have in actors’ experiences of representing dolesse.
