ABSTRACT

The introduction explains that the Sylloge Tacticorum belongs to the literary genre of military manuals and it provides an overview of this genre from classical antiquity to Byzantine times. It then summarizes the content of the treatise and explores the manuscript tradition of the text, and especially the history of its main manuscript, the Laurentianus Plut. 75.6, from its acquisition from Janus Laskaris to the present day. In addition, it offers an overview of all extant editions and translations of the Sylloge Tacticorum, as well as of previous scholarly analysis of the text. The introduction closes by explaining the gaps that this book aims to cover.
