ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 discusses the dating of the Sylloge Tacticorum. After analysing the difficulties regarding the dating of the text, the study offers a new dating theory. Taking into consideration the internal evidence of the treatise and the broader geo-political, domestic political, administrative and military milieu of the empire and its neighbours, the chapter argues that the Sylloge Tacticorum should be dated in the first half of the tenth century and most probably in the reign of Romanos I Lekapenos (920-944).
