ABSTRACT

Physically the Kingdom of Ruanda is a part of the elongated highland zone extending at varying elevations from the Red Sea to Lake Nyasa. The northern boundaries of the country are not as clearly defined by physical factors, except in the west by the Virunga volcanic massif including eight peaks, the highest of which, Karisimbi, reaches 4,507 metres. Several hypotheses have been advanced in attempts to reconstruct the history of the human occupations of Ruanda. The present population of Ruanda is clearly composed of three groups: Twa, Hutu, and Tutsi. Hunting played very little part in their quest for food. Only the Twa, for whom hunting was a traditional occupation, ate game, which is another reasonthey were despised by the Hutu and Tutsi. The traditional Twa garment was a sheep skin. The Hutu wore bark-cloth as a sort of skirt from the waist down to the knees.
