ABSTRACT

Cattle and small stock may be obtained by inheritance, bride-price, exchange, purchase, and gift. Of these inheritance and bride-price are the most important. In Zinza the customs of inheritance show some differences. If a Sukuma marries a Zinza he will not be required to make the payment of cattle customary among Sukuma, though he may give a present which would be returned at any time if the marriage were to be dissolved. The most important wealth, as we have seen, is children, because they will grow up and produce the most important material assets, which are food and cattle. Milk and ghee or clarified butter are perhaps the most important, and they are the property of the man who is looking after the cattle whether he is the actual owner or whether the animals have only been lent to him.
