ABSTRACT

360/VR journalism has evolved rapidly through the “magic window” on mobile devices and head-mounted displays (HMDs) in immersive formats, endowing digital journalism with unprecedented technological and narrative power. For journalists, new VR technology offers a potent storytelling tool for eliciting user empathy, one that demands a thorough reconsideration of editing methods, which have transformed ethical principles of production. This experimental phase has given rise to the medium’s initial set of best practices, which capitalize on spatial storytelling, while diminishing the importance of the cut as an editorial tool and means of expression.
