ABSTRACT

LEŊGE girls are told about sexual matters at a very early age. At the age of puberty they used to be taken to the ambutsa or initiation school, as will be presently described. The girl’s women relations would inform her of the coming event, and tell her that she would be required at the Initiation School to carry very heavy domestic utensils, and that she would have kurwala ʃitsandza (i.e. to bear something impossible), which seems to be the euphemistic phrase for the test or operation of the ceremonies. Σitsandza also means a heavy log of wood.
