ABSTRACT

IF I tried to sum up very shortly the characteristics of the Leŋge, I should say: They are religious and punctilious in observing even the small details of their ritual. They have a decided scientific bias. This is shown in the way they have one name, or more, for every tiny blade of grass, every little bird which sings, and in their minute observation of all natural phenomena; by their very careful preparation of food, and the numerous stages in its preparation (ill-cooked or ill-prepared food is not known among them); by the native industries of pottery and basket making and the extremely careful preparation of the materials, and the good work resulting; by their liking for medicines; the careful dosage in a mussel-shell, and the counting the drops (kuminyeta) of the right dose. When the Leŋge are interested then they will take infinite pains.
