The teacher who has accepted a child for remedial attention has then to make decisions as to the best ways of helping him. This situation is commonly seen by skilled teachers in terms of choice of methods and materials such as to re-motivate the pupil. E. J. Atkinson and C. W. Gains list ninety-three publishers producing 126 books or series suitable for the remedial teaching of juniors and 109 for seniors, as well as numerous texts, programmes, and other materials to help with mathematics and other subjects. Several versions of colour methods of teaching reading exist and these are largely phonic-based. The idea seems to have started with the work of Nellie Dale who tried to make learning to read a logical' and 'fun'-involving process. Her methods included approaches which have not survived but her principle of using colour as an aid to the identification of the sound value of letters and syllables is still approved by many.
