ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the research in more detail with regard to materials and methods. The projects are based on a social model understanding of disability, as developed by feminist scholars such as Carol Thomas. A Study of Sexuality, Disability and Personal Assistance comprised some sub-studies aiming to capture the complexity of sexual facilitation. The semi-structured interview approach with assistance users allowed for discussions that differed depending on previous experiences, for instance family background, identity, disabling barriers, relationship to assistants and sexual experiences. The policy analysis had both descriptive and analytical objectives. Initially, the different policy approaches to disability in general, and to dealing with sexual support in particular, were mapped. Research participants were anonymised with regard to their names but not their organisational affiliation. Disability as a category is used to justify the classification, supervision, segregation and oppression of certain people, bodies, and practices.
