ABSTRACT

The term kitsch can refer to one of two things. Either it points to characteristics associated with pretentiousness or it describes an object whose appearance, replete with sentimentality and vulgarity, is intended to coerce emotions. Today, a great deal of so-called ‘craft’ displays ample evidence of both – such objects are not only vacuous, they do a grave disservice to bona fide traditions that are purposeful, meaningful, often deeply representative of sustainable principles, and rooted in cultural beliefs.
