ABSTRACT
173 Instrumental reason, pragmatism, efficiency and realpolitik direct the actions of our age but their astringent indifference leaves us wanting. These guiding lights know of everything except wisdom. Let us set them aside for a season to better recognize that efforts of no practical value are not for nothing. Metaphorical relics transcend thoughts of usefulness and make visible allusions that have always sustained us.
