ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book highlights the international monitoring functions of the CRPD Committee and the procedures which must be complied with to access the Optional Protocol. It elaborates the major pillars of the Convention and the principles of equality and non-discrimination as they are the yardsticks to determine how States Parties comply with the international rule of law. The book also emphasises the intersectional and aggravated forms of discrimination experienced by women and girls with disabilities, and points the way forward for its elimination. It explains how the provisions of the CRPD have been instrumental in strengthening the civil and political rights of persons with disabilities and its application to novel situations. The book focuses on both international and domestic case law to bring home how economic, social and cultural rights have become increasingly justiciable.
