ABSTRACT

Fundamental in understandings of modern democracy is its ethical core stressing the need to protect everyone’s equal and intrinsic value and shield the existence of plurality. Besides seeing everyone’s equal value as intrinsic it is also approached in an instrumental fashion where research shows that safe environments, environments where individuals are not afraid of being hurt, strengthens possibilities for learning. Education and teacher education are not liberated from create tensions, seeing that they are a part of society, and create tensions generate dilemmas that are important to highlight. Weakness within philosophy and empirical research has generally been described either as mental incapability when it comes to taming strong emotions and as such act in a socially desired way or like physical weakness it is thought to occur due to a lack of training or some form of illness.
