ABSTRACT

Two of the values that underpin Single-session therapy (SST) are openness and feedback. In effective SST, these values are reciprocally expressed. Since the therapist and the client potentially have one session with one another, it is important for them both to be honest with one another. Thus, the client needs to be open with the therapist about what they are struggling with and what they want from the process. The therapist needs to be clear with the client on the following issues. What they can do and cannot do within the SST context; whether or not they can help the person; and whether or not that have had prior experience in helping people with problems similar to the client's. Finally, therapist openness can be expressed in self-disclosure. Thus, the therapist may disclose that they have encountered a similar problem to the one that the client is experiencing, but that they have overcome the problem.
